Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is a game show that rewards participants with cash prizes for answering multiple choice questions correctly. The further they go, the more money they would win.
On 19 November 1999, John Carpenter, an Internal Revenue Service employee from Hamden, CT, made history by being the first $1 million dollar winner of the incredibly popular game show. Carpenter is not only the first winner but the only one to ever not have to use a lifeline to get the correct answer. His final question required him to identify Richard Nixon as the president who appeared on "Laugh In," at which point he finally used a lifeline to call his father. "I don't really need your help. I just wanted to let you know that I'm gonna win the million dollars."
