Guess the animal (it’s not in it!)

You hear the name buffalo wings, and your brain does a double take. Wait... buffalo? Like the shaggy beast? Same thing happens when someone offers you monkey bread at the bakery or raves about spider rolls. Are people out here just eating the entire zoo?
Well, just because a dish is named after an animal doesn't mean it contains one. Some names are literal, sureโchicken nuggets are undeniably chicken. But toad in the hole? Ants on a log? Sounds like a dare.
This quiz is all about food names. You'll get a series of real dishes with animal-inspired namesโbut here's the twist: you'll need to figure out which animal each dish is supposedly named after. Some names are clever, some are misleading.
Let's talk about the odd world of animal-named foods.
What's in a Name?
Food naming is weird. It's part history, part marketing, and sometimes just pure nonsense. In the case of animal-named dishes, most follow a few quirky patterns:
- Visual resemblance: Think of bear claws or beaver tails.
- Metaphor or playfulness: Ants on a log uses raisins to mimic ants. Toad in the hole is a British classic with sausage "sitting" in a batter bed, like a toad poking out of mud.
- Geographic names: Buffalo wings come from Buffalo, New Yorkโno roaming bison were harmed.
- Marketing flair: Names like dragon roll or hummingbird cake just sound cooler than "avocado sushi" or "pineapple-banana-spice cake."
So when you see a food named after an animal, ask yourself: is this literal, poetic, or straight-up misleading?
5 Foods Named After Animals
Here's a short list of well-known animal-named foods that have zero of the named animal in them:
- Buffalo wings: Chicken wings, named after the city of Buffalo.
- Bear claws: A flaky pastry with almond paste filling.
- Monkey bread: Pull-apart cinnamon sugar breadโfun to eat, zero primates involved.
- Dragon roll: Sushi roll with shrimp tempura and avocado. The dragon is just there for drama.
- Puppy chow: A Midwestern snack made from Chex cereal, peanut butter, and chocolate. Dogs don't eat thisโyou do.
And those are just a handful. More to come in the quiz!
Why Do People Name Foods After Animals?
Sometimes it's tradition. Sometimes it's branding. And other times it's just because someone decades ago thought it sounded funny or cuteโand it stuck.
There's also something psychologically fun about giving food an unexpected twist. "Elephant ears" sounds way more memorable than "deep-fried flattened dough." "Moose tracks" is a lot more exciting than "vanilla ice cream with chocolate and peanut butter blobs."
Plus, food culture is full of puns, metaphors, and exaggerations. The names don't need to make senseโthey just need to stick in your brain.
How to Take the Foods Named After Animals Quiz
Here's how it works:
- You'll be shown the image of a dish.
- Your task? Choose the animal that features in the dish name.
- For each question, you'll get four animal options. One is correct (what the dish name refers to), and the rest are red herrings.
- You'll see a short explanation after each answerโbecause trivia should always teach you something new.
- Finish the quiz to earn points and climb our trivia leaderboards! The more you play, the higher you go.
Whether you're a foodie, a trivia buff, or just someone who likes weird food facts, this one's for you.
Can You Tell Which Animal These Dishes Are Named After?
In a world where food trends come and go, where recipes go viral because someone made lasagna in a waffle iron, it's oddly comforting to know that "pigs in blankets" still just means mini sausages in pastry.
So whether you've eaten these dishes before or you're hearing about them for the first time, this quiz will take you through a fun little food safari.
Let's see how many of these wild-sounding foods you can correctly guess.

Some of the ones named for mythical creatures were Asian foods.
Like Phoenix claws for chicken feet, lol.
But some of the ones I never heard of were European too.
