Brunch, sporks, and other word mashups.

What's a Portmanteau?
You've definitely heard them. You've probably used a bunch without even realizing it. Brunch, spork, smog, hangry, sitcom, motelโall everyday words that actually have two words combined into one. That's what we call a portmanteau, where two familiar words get mashed together to form a brand-new one.
Linguists call them blended words, and they're some of the most creative, amusing, and useful parts of modern language. If you've ever said "staycation" or "infomercial," you've used portmanteaus.
But the trick is this: not every word that sounds like a portmanteau actually is one. Some are just...made up to mess with you. And today, you're going to try to learn all about them in this portmanteau trivia quiz.
So Where Did This All Start?
The term portmanteau came from Lewis Carroll, who coined it in Through the Looking-Glass. When Humpty Dumpty explains the word "slithy," he says it means "lithe and slimy"โa combination of two meanings in one word. Carroll called it a portmanteau word, referencing an old suitcase that opens into two compartments. Two words, one suitcase. Neat.
Since then, the English language has taken the concept and run wild with it. Some blends are purely descriptive, some are born from marketing genius, and some are just weird internet memes that stuck.
How to Tell If a Word Is a Portmanteau
Most portmanteaus follow a few loose rules:
- They combine parts of two words, usually the beginning of one and the end of another.
- The meaning reflects the two words it blends.
- It's catchy, useful, or funny enough to spread.
For example, glamping is glamorous + camping. It means camping, but with styleโlike sleeping in a yurt with air-con and fairy lights instead of sweating in a leaky tent.
Some Portmanteaus You Probably Know
You don't need to be a linguist to recognize these common mashups. Here's a quick list to jog your memory:
- Brunch: breakfast + lunch
- Smog: smoke + fog
- Spork: spoon + fork
- Frenemy: friend + enemy
- Guesstimate: guess + estimate
- Blog: web + log
- Podcast: iPod + broadcast
- Motel: motor + hotel
- Sitcom: situation + comedy
- Hangry: hungry + angry
- Chillax: chill + relax
- Infomercial: information + commercial
Funny how natural they sound, right? Now try separating them in your head and you realize just how clever they are.

I’m not a big fan of portmanteau words. I get as far as brunch and smog, but some of the more recent ones turn me off.
