However, things changed when Raffaele Esposito, a baker, created the margherita pizza for the reigning king and queen. The royals were deeply impressed by the colors of the dish, which shared similarities with the Italian flag. This boosted the popularity of the dish. The pizza truly came into prominence with the inception of the world's first pizzeria in the same place, named Port'Alba. Since then, pizzerias are set up all over the world, with more than 60,000 in the US alone.
