Part of the beauty of the Game of Thrones franchise is that the characters are so well-crafted and complex that the audience can often seem themselves in some of them. Life in Westeros is obviously quite different than what we experience in our day-to-day lives. None of us get to find out how we would respond if we learned we were the heir to the Iron Throne or were able to become a parental figure to dragons. It's hard to relate, you see.
Despite this, the characters contained within George R. R. Martin's epic tales are similar to us in so many ways. How different people deal with adversity, triumph, and tragedy are all central themes in the show and books.
