You got 17 out of 20!

In the maths question, the question setter did not make the sum solvable, because it needed a pair of brackets around two consecutive numbers in order to make it possible to solve the sum correctly and unambiguously!

I’ll explain the two possible solutions when a pair of brackets is inserted to make the sum clear:
1. 2y = (4 + 3) x 2
This means that 2y = 7 x 2, which is 14.
Therefore, if 2y = 14, y = 7

2. 2y = 4 + (3 x 2)
This means that 2y = 4 + 6, which is 10.
Therefore, if 2y = 10, y = 5

Written WITHOUT a pair of brackets around two adjacent digits, we have TWO equally possible answers, meaning that ‘y’ could equally well be 7 OR 5!
So, the setter needs to know about the use of brackets, and must apply them in order for the maths problem to work! I have to assume that the person who set this maths problem is NOT a mathematician!
P.S. I use the word ‘maths’ rather than ‘math’ as I’m British!
