All animals need food to survive. Animals eat many different kinds of foods including other animals, fish, plants, fruits, nuts and seeds, tree leaves and branches, insects, and grass.

As each species evolves, its digestive system, brain and endocrine system evolves with it. As a species moves around on the landscape and decides where to live and find food, it can populate only those areas in which it is able to find sufficient food and keep away from predators enough to secure a population large enough to ensure viable reproduction to continue to be a species.

Animals that eat only plants are called herbivores. Most herbivores, including the giraffe, horse, rhinoceros, and parrot, eat a wide variety of plants and plant parts. Some herbivores, however, are very particular about the plant matter they eat.
