    I got 18 out of 24!
Amazing! You have a world-class knowledge of countries and their fascinating histories. You’re a true globetrotter with an impressive grasp on how nations have evolved over time.

I would have done even worse, but during Covid-19 I would check the casualty figures daily and would wonder what was Eswatini and what was Mayotte. I was impressed that these small lands would comply with the WHO and file daily reports on infection rates and deaths.

About This Quiz

Countries That Changed Their Names

Imagine waking up one day to find that your hometown had a brand-new name. Sounds wild, right? Well, that’s exactly what has happened to many countries throughout history. Countries have changed their names for a variety of reasons—political shifts, independence, rebranding efforts, or simply to reflect a new national identity. Each former name holds a piece of history, a story of transformation, and sometimes, a tale of struggle and triumph.

For instance, did you know that Sri Lanka was once known as Ceylon? This change was about the country shedding its colonial past and stepping into a new chapter of independence. The same goes for Iran, which was once called Persia. The name change was part of an effort to unify the country and distance it from its ancient empire image.

Why Countries Change Their Names

Why would a country want to change its name in the first place? It’s a big decision, after all. Well, there are a few reasons this happens. Sometimes it’s due to gaining independence from colonial rule. Many countries in Africa and Asia, for example, reverted to names that reflected their native culture and heritage after gaining independence from European powers.

Other times, it’s due to political or ideological changes within the country. For example, Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, changed its name as part of a larger push to move away from its colonial past and embrace its own identity.

And then there are cases like Thailand, which was known as Siam until 1939. The name was changed to reflect the unity of the Thai people and to create a stronger sense of national identity. It’s all about the image that the country wants to project to the world and to its own citizens.

FAQs About Country Name Changes

Let’s address some of the burning questions you might have about countries changing their names.

1. Are there any countries that have changed their names more than once?

Yes, there are! Some countries have had multiple name changes throughout history. Take Zimbabwe, for instance. It was known as Rhodesia during the colonial period, and before that, it was called Southern Rhodesia. The name changed to Zimbabwe in 1980 when the country gained independence.

2. What are some recent examples of countries changing their names?

A notable recent example is Eswatini, which was known as Swaziland until 2018. The name change was announced by King Mswati III on the country's 50th anniversary of independence. Eswatini means "land of the Swazis" in the Swazi language.

3. Do people in these countries still use the old names?

In some cases, yes. Old names can stick around in casual conversation, especially among older generations or in regions that have a strong attachment to the former name. However, in official documents and international relations, the new names are used.

4. How do these name changes affect the people living in the country?

The impact of a name change can vary. For some, it’s a point of pride and a marker of independence or a new beginning. For others, especially in cases where the change is tied to political turmoil, it can be a source of confusion or even division. But in most cases, people eventually adapt to the new name, and it becomes a part of their national identity.
