Did you know that it takes an average 22 years before we can appreciate "grown-up" foods such as spinach, oysters and certain kinds of cheese?
A survey, carried out by popcorn makers Butterkist, found that it is not until our early twenties that we are able to enjoy more complex flavors, though most adults will still find there are at least two foods they will never get along with.
Our five basic tastes are sweet, sour, salty, bitter and savory, while many flavors can come across as overbearing until our palates mature. The change in tastebuds may be due to biology; babies are born with around 30,000 taste buds, but by the time of adulthood only a third will remain, allowing adults to enjoy more pungent foods.
So, if you have eaten many of these foods in this quiz, without anyone forcing you to, then congratulations, you are officially a grown-up, or at least, you have a mature palate. Have a go at this and see if you have tried the majority of them willingly, and see how much of an adult you really are.
