One noteworthy event that unfolded in the past year was the surge of Bitcoin's popularity. The promise of cryptocurrency has caused a rise in value in the risky venture. In all, Bitcoin has seen a roughly 20-fold rise since the beginning of 2017, outshining virtually every conventional investment.

2017 was also the year for twin celebrity babies. George Clooney and his wife Amal welcomed twins on June 6, while Jay-Z and Beyonce welcomed their twins a week later on the 13th. Coincidentally both pairs of twins consist of a boy and a girl. Adding to the count was Madonna, who adopted a pair of twins.
