If you've been on the Internet in the past few years, you probably have heard of the Mandela effect. It refers to an eerie phenomenon where many people collectively remember the same events incorrectly. It stirred controversy online when conspiracy theorists claimed it was caused by the crossing of parallel universes or massive government cover-ups.
This theory was first coined in 2010 after a blogger believed that the aforementioned former South African President Nelson Mandela had died during his infamous imprisonment in the eighties. Her impression of this event was shared by many; people clearly remembered seeing speeches about him and citizens mourning across the nation. However, at that point in time, he was still very much alive. His unfortunate death wasn't until many years later, in 2013.
