Earth is a populous place (7.9 billion people as of mid-2021) and ever-growing. Even as some regions of the world grow slowly or are even shrinking (the more developed economies), other regions of the world are growing quickly (the least-developed nations). Add in the fact that people live longer due to improvements in medicine and infrastructure (such as sanitation and water treatment), our planet is expected to see an increase in population for decades to come.

The most populous area on Earth is Asia, as it is home to three of the top 4 and half of the top 10 most populated nations (placing Russia in Europe). Three in every 5 people of the world's population live in Asia, or about 4.5 billion.

In the last few decades, the world's population has gone from being mostly rural to mostly urban. The world's largest urban area, Tokyo (37.5 million), has almost the same population as the entire country of Canada (37.6 million)!
