20/20. If you know the oceans (including the Southern, which used to be considered part of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic), it’s pretty easy. I did learn of a few new seas, though! Bonus question–the Mediterranean Sea connects Europe and Africa, and the Red Sea connects Africa and Asia (Asian Minor, as we used to call it!).

Have you ever thought about how many oceans and seas there really are? Most people can name a handful—the Pacific, the Atlantic, maybe the Mediterranean—but can you truly distinguish an ocean from a sea when it's tricky? This quiz is designed to challenge your geography smarts and give you some fascinating facts along the way. You'll learn, have fun, and maybe even surprise yourself.
Before we start, let's set the stage. Knowing a few things about how oceans and seas are classified will make this quiz even more engaging.
Oceans vs Seas: What's the Difference?
Most people assume oceans and seas are just different names for big water bodies—but there's more to it. Here's what you need to know:
Oceans are the largest bodies of saltwater on Earth. There are five major oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. They cover about 71% of the Earth's surface!
Seas are smaller, often partially enclosed by land, and may connect to oceans. Examples include the Caribbean Sea, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea.
Location, size, and boundaries usually help classify a body of water as a sea or ocean. Some tricky cases blur the lines, and that's exactly what this quiz will test.
Think of it like this: oceans are the "big stage" of the planet's waters, while seas are the "smaller rooms," each with its own personality, ecosystems, and stories.
5 Fun Facts About Oceans and Seas
Here's a quick list to whet your appetite before you start:
The Pacific Ocean is so large it could fit all of Earth's continents inside it!
The Mediterranean Sea has been a major trade route for thousands of years.
The Red Sea is one of the warmest and saltiest seas on Earth.
The Arctic Ocean is shrinking faster than ever due to climate change.
Some seas, like the Sargasso, are defined by floating seaweed rather than land boundaries.
These tidbits will help you think critically while answering questions—and maybe give you a few "aha" moments.
