Each time a highly anticipated movie is released, movie makers and fans alike eagerly await to see if it becomes an instant classic. Movie franchises like Harry Potter and Marvel films have legions of supporters that help them make a ton of money at the worldwide box office.
Titanic, a favorite of many, held the coveted number one spot for highest-grossing movie for an unprecedented 12 years, with worldwide takings of $2.186 billion. The movie that finally knocked it off the top spot was Avatar, which made $2.788 billion. While these blockbusters have demolished box office records, they're still no match for the heavy hitters of years past when you adjust for inflation. Epic film Gone with the Wind from 1939 starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh would take that honor of highest-grossing movie of all time.
