Just found this reading through the comments. I’ll have to google that and find out more. I really do have absolutely no sense of direction. I have trouble particularly in buildings with lots of corridors and broken up areas like hospitals. I have to ask how to get out again all the time. I have lost my car several times in car parks, no matter how hard I try to visualise where I am so I don’t get lost. It can be pretty disconcerting. It’s no use asking me for directions unless you want to get very lost.

19/20. Answer to the bonus question is the Seine. But my brain is far from being a human GPS. I get lost when I turn a corner, even inside a building or a house I have a little familiarity with. I do well on these because I don’t have to pinpoint where places are, multiple choice helps heaps, and I only lost one argument with myself when half guessing. Actually there are just two pieces of technology I really value, my Kindle and when I was still driving GPS.

About This Quiz

S in Geography Quiz

If you've ever looked at a map and thought, "Wow, a lot of places start with the letter S," you're not wrong. Whether it's Singapore, Switzerland or the Sahara desert, the letter S stamps itself all over the world. And we're all here for it in this S in Geography Quiz.

Every answer begins with an S, and each question is a chance to learn something new or flex what you already know. But be warned: it's harder than it looks. You'll be squinting at your screen wondering, "Wait, is that a city or a country?" or "Was that in South America or Europe?"

Countries That Start With S

How many countries starting with S can you name without Googling?

  1. Spain: Sun, sangria, siestas—and a rich history of empire, art, and irresistible jamón ibérico.
  2. Switzerland: Precision watches, impeccable trains, and more alpine postcard views than your phone can handle.
  3. Sweden: Home of ABBA, IKEA, and more lakes than you'll ever count in a lifetime.
  4. Singapore: A gleaming urban jungle known for hawker food, spotless streets, and its ability to blend tradition and tech.
  5. Sri Lanka: Lush jungles, ancient temples, and a coastline that surfers and elephants both adore.
  6. Slovenia: A fairytale blend of mountains, lakes, and surprisingly charming capital vibes in Ljubljana.
  7. Slovakia: Castles, caves, and countryside magic hiding right in the heart of Europe.
  8. South Africa: A mosaic of wildlife, wine, and world-changing history.
  9. South Korea: K-pop, kimchi, and one of the most tech-forward nations in the world.
  10. Sudan: Land of pyramids older than Egypt's and complex stories that deserve more airtime.
  11. South Sudan: The world's youngest country, full of resilience and rebuilding.
  12. Seychelles: Paradise-level islands floating in the Indian Ocean.
  13. San Marino: A teeny, proud republic perched inside Italy with its own flair.
  14. São Tomé and Príncipe: Coffee, cocoa, and quiet island beauty off the coast of Africa.
  15. Saint Kitts and Nevis: Tropical, tranquil, and often overlooked—perfect for escaping the tourist hordes.
  16. Saint Lucia: Where the Pitons pierce the sky and the beaches are all Instagram-worthy.
  17. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: A Caribbean escape with rhythm, soul, and soft sands.
  18. Syrian Arab Republic: A land of ancient cities and heartbreaking modern history.
  19. Somalia: Horn of Africa, rich in culture and tradition amid ongoing struggles.
  20. Serbia: A Balkan gem with wild nightlife and deep-rooted history.
  21. Saudi Arabia: Desert grandeur, oil-fueled skyscrapers, and spiritual Mecca.
  22. Suriname: South America's smallest country with surprising Dutch colonial flair.

Cities That Start With S

Cities often steal the spotlight—and for good reason.

  • Seoul: Tech-saturated, stylish, and endlessly energetic.
  • Stockholm: Cool, calm, and outrageously design-savvy.
  • San Francisco: Fog, freedom, and a whole lot of startups.
  • Sydney: Beaches, big bridges, and the boldest of Aussie vibes.
  • Shanghai: Sky-high, fast-paced, and unapologetically modern.
  • Santiago: A slice of Chile between Andes and ambition.
  • Sofia: Underrated Balkan charm meets Soviet echoes.
  • Singapore: Worth listing twice. It's that efficient.

Landmarks That Start With S

Iconic, historical, or just straight-up weird—these places stick in your head.

  • Stonehenge: Still no one knows why, but everyone agrees it's cool.
  • Sagrada Familia: Gaudí's masterpiece cathedral that looks like it melted in the sun.
  • Statue of Liberty: The global symbol of freedom, raised in New York but made in France.
  • Shwedagon Pagoda: Golden, glowing, and grounding in Myanmar's skyline.
  • Salar de Uyuni: The world's largest salt flat, a Bolivian mirror to the skies.
  • Serengeti National Park: Lions, zebras, and the Great Migration—nature at its rawest.
  • Sigiriya Rock Fortress: Ancient Sri Lankan citadel that looks like something out of Zelda.

How to Take the S in Geography Quiz

  1. Read each question and guess the correct 'S' answer from four options.
  2. Click your choice to lock it in.
  3. After every answer, you'll see a short explanation so you actually learn something.
  4. Score high to climb our leaderboard! Top scorers get bragging rights (and possibly a little ego boost).
  5. Finish the quiz? Try another quiz in this series to keep going!

This quiz won't win you a geography degree, but it might win your respect at the next dinner party. It's fun, occasionally tricky, and designed to wake up that dusty part of your brain where old map knowledge lives.

So sharpen your wits, summon your inner explorer, and let's see how well you really know your S's.
